Q&A with our Managing Director, Tony.

We sat down with Managing Director, Tony, to find out how GTS Logistics UK was formed, how it has evolved and what’s next for the business.

How did you get into the industry?
‘After my economics degree, I started with P&O as a Management Trainee and gained a good grounding in all areas of logistics including operations, sales and finance. I was doing everything from handling jobs to drivers and meeting clients… I was hooked!’

Why did you set up GTS UK?
‘After a long career in logistics, I decided I’d like to set up my own company. I became aware that GTS Italy Group were looking to expand and set up a UK company with a partner. It was clear there was a major opportunity to develop GTS UK with independent services aligned to the GTS Italy group. So I became Managing Director and have never looked back.’

What does a typical day at work look like for you?
‘Every day is different, there's a mixture of strategy and day to day tasks. My main focus is always on our values and making sure our customers' needs are being met. As the business continues to grow, I ensure the building blocks are in place and our team have the tools and conditions needed to provide a premium service.’

Why are you passionate about the industry?
‘Transport and logistics are major contributors to global emissions - it’s crucial to reduce these emissions for the future of our planet. I'm proud that we can offer a more environmentally friendly service via Intermodal.’

What’s been your career highlight so far?
‘It would be easy to name some individual business wins but my main career highlight is to have maintained my core values: working hard, being genuine and always trying to improve.

I have always embraced taking on more responsibility and tried to provide solutions for customers whilst doing things the ‘right way’ and treating everyone with respect.’

What’s been your biggest challenge so far?
‘We’ve had to face many challenges – Brexit, Covid-19, war, escalating fuel costs and more but we always provide clear communication with our customers and have used these events to prove our reliability.’

What are you most proud of with what you’ve built so far at GTS?
‘I started working at my home office with only a desk and a telephone to promote GTS services with ZERO customers and revenue. Fast forward to now, GTS UK has over £3m company revenue, 160 customers (and growing), 10 staff and 4 drivers.

I’m also proud of our key quality accreditations which demonstrate our commitment to best practice.’

What are you most proud of about the service you deliver to customers?
Every order and every customer is important. We build strong relationships with our customers and partners through good service and trust. The most rewarding thing is knowing we’re trusted by so many, allowing our business to grow.’

What’s next for GTS?
‘We have an exciting 5 year growth plan to continue momentum. This includes some key strategic aims to grow our 4 service segments. We’re also continually looking to make improvements, including new IT systems and more resources to support both our current clients and new ones.’
