Q&A with our apprentice, Sam Overton
Sam joined the GTS UK team six months ago and has excelled in his role. Here, he reflects on his first six months of learning from our experienced team and being part of the GTS family.
Why did you want to come to GTS UK to do your apprenticeship?
When I came to meet Lewis, he told me that I’d be involved straight away, so I could learn about the operations of the company and all the different sectors.
I had started an apprenticeship elsewhere but I was really keen to continue my training somewhere else, somewhere where I could get more hands on. The opportunity to learn from experienced people every day was too good to turn down.
Lewis has put a lot of effort into getting me integrated and helping me learn skills across all areas of the business.
What have you learnt in your time here so far?
First, I was helping Paul within the Haulage arm of the company. I learnt a lot about planning and driving hours. I then moved onto Supply Chain, where I worked alongside Darren and Roxy, who are both vastly experienced and knowledgeable. Having the chance to sit and learn alongside them has given me a brilliant opportunity that my peers won’t necessarily have had the benefit of.
Has anything surprised you about working at GTS UK so far?
I was surprised at how fast paced the job is. We’re busy all year round and there’s always something happening in logistics which requires attention.
Is being an apprentice what you expected and why?
Yes, absolutely. There’s a good balance between learning and working. Overall, it’s been a great experience so far and I can’t wait to see what comes next.
Has working here altered your plans for the future and how do you see your career panning out now?
Yes, it has. When I was studying law, my plan was always to go into that industry, but I’ve enjoyed working in logistics so much that it’s made me want to progress my career in this direction instead.
What advice would you give to anyone contemplating doing an apprenticeship?
I would say - do it! I was at university for four years before I started here and I never felt completely satisfied. I wish I’d made the decision sooner, rather than following the more common route of full-time education.
