Bomb disposal driver explains why GTS UK was the perfect place for his next assignment

Variety is the spice of life and nowhere is this more apt than within the GTS UK team.

Our business draws on a team with hugely varied experiences and while some have developed their skills on our doorstep, others have spent time in far-flung places.

Our newest driver, Steve, is the epitome of exactly that. He has one of the most varied and incredible CVs you could imagine, but he has “never been so happy” than working as part of the GTS UK team.

Having worked across the world – from the Sahara Desert to Iraq – his latest deployment with GTS UK stands apart.

“It was an easy decision. I haven’t looked back,” he said. “The general feeling from Paul (transport manager), the office staff and about the job was that everyone was so friendly and the office was so welcoming. I was immediately put at ease and it just suited what I wanted to do.

“I’ve never been so happy in a job as what I am here at GTS. I get to work with great people and do the job I love. I thoroughly appreciate having responsibility entrusted in me and I’m not treated as a number.”

Steve started his career in the military and went on to provide advanced driver training at the MoD Defence School of Transport in Leconfield, East Yorkshire. There he specialised in teaching advanced driving techniques to diplomats and, from there, went on to visit a range of global embassies – including in Bangladesh, Papua New Guinea and China - to teach high profile visitors how to deal with diplomatic security concerns.

Aside from also being a trained Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) vehicle instructor, Steve later operated in the armed close protection team for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, working as a consultant in Iraq between 2004 and 2006. In this role he looked after members of the Royal Family, then Prime Minister Tony Blair and future PM Boris Johnson during overseas visits.

But his career of international travel came to an end after a serious motorbike crash. The incident made him revaluate what was important to him and return home to the UK.

After making a full recovery he was looking for a new challenge and, after chatting through his options with Paul, Steve joined our Trucking team based at Killingholme, North Lincolnshire, in June.

He can be seen out and about on the UK’s roads from South East England to Scotland so be sure to give him a wave next time you see him!
