Major customs change coming in 2024
A significant change to the way around 90 per cent of our UK imports and exports are declared is coming.
If you haven’t already heard from our team of customs experts, they will be contacting clients in the coming weeks to let you know about how this alteration will affect your business.
The 999L waiver code is used by a high proportion of our clients as it allows importers to avoid the need to present licenses and other documentation at customs. However, this will change from 31st January 2024.
Why change?
The code was introduced in September 2022 as a means of making it easier and quicker for customs clearances to be accepted during the transition from HMRC’s Customs Handling of Import and Export Freight (CHIEF) system to its new platform. You can read more about the transition here.
Our commitment to a smooth transition
Given the high volume of clearances using 999L, many logistics providers may face delays from 31st January but we are committed to doing everything we can to avoid them. With prevention at the forefront of our mind, we are going to be removing these codes from all entries going forward and contacting clients to let you know how these changes will affect your business.
Instead of the waiver, the importer will be presented with a series of codes to use according to the commodity code declared.
