We’ve hired our first apprentice

Since launching in 2015, our team and nurturing its development has been at the heart of everything we stand for.

Without our incredible team, the outstanding progress we have made would not be possible – and our attention is now turning to nurturing the next generation to ensure our success for the long term.

This week marks National Apprenticeship Week which celebrates the achievements of apprentices around the country and serves to promote continuing education through the world of work.

We recently took on our first apprentice, Sam, who is about to celebrate his first month with the business and has started on his journey learning the ins and outs of both how we operate and the wider logistics industry.

Here, he explains all about his route to this point, his current role and his ambitions for the future:

Name: Sam Overton

Age: 23

Job title: Supply Chain Apprentice

After leaving college, I spent five years studying law at the University of Hull which I did alongside a part-time role in the events team at Dove House Hospice. My first ‘real’ job came after that when I worked at ABP as an executive support apprentice.

I came across the GTS job online, through the government apprenticeship website and jumped at the chance to apply. It was important for me to find the right position but just as vital to gain a qualification which would be beneficial to my choice of career.

I wanted a job where I could get into the operations of a business and do a job where I’d feel involved. I came and spoke to Lewis, GTS’ general manager, and instantly knew he understood what I wanted as a career. My career ambitions aligned with the company and it was a great fit for me.

I’ve already learnt a huge amount in the first month of being here. I’m lucky because everyone in the team has so much experience in logistics to learn from. I feel like I’m in the best environment to progress my career. You literally learn something new every day. The company make a real effort to ensure they’re constantly teaching me new skills and responsibilities.

At the moment, I’m assisting Paul with planning the Trucking division and helping with day-to-day operations. Some of the tasks I do include sending the drivers their job information, taking orders and helping plan the deliveries.

I’m still new to the industry but I can’t wait to see where it takes me. I want to see myself progress in a successful company long-term and grow my own logistics career alongside them.

I would recommend an apprenticeship to anyone wanting to take their first steps in a new industry and thank GTS for the opportunity to get up and running!
